JEDI invites 3rd, 4th and 5th graders—as well as parents, caregivers and faculty—to continue the conversation on sports and social justice, with a “Colin in Black & White” Study Group.
“Colin in Black & White” chronicles the upbringing and young life of football quarterback and activist Colin Kaepernick and the events that lead to his monumental protest for civil rights in his NFL career. Directed by Ava DuVernay and created with Kaepernick, the show is an inspiring story that is geared towards kids age 10 and up. DuVernay’s production company, Array, also has created an insightful learning companion that students and families can use to inform the conversation at home.
Episodes are available on Netflix and JEDI recommends watching the episode at home before each session. However, anyone is welcome to join (even if you haven’t seen the show).

May 9 – Episode 1: Cornrows - A young Colin Kaepernick navigates the insecurities, complexities and revelations he experiences growing up as a biracial kid with adoptive parents in a predominantly white neighborhood in California.
May 16 – Episode 2: Quarterbackin’ - With dreams of being a high school varsity quarterback, Colin learns the hard way that talent isn’t the only thing he’ll need to prosper on the field.
May 23 – Episode 3: Road Trip - While traveling with his parents to baseball tournaments, Colin experiences a series of events that challenge his view about his place in the world.
