Ensuring students’ safety is one of the top priorities for Ivanhoe’s faculty and staff.

The principal’s standing Safety Committee, made up of current faculty and families, reviews safety plans, discusses any emerging safety concerns, and makes and executes plans to ensure the safety of our campus and out students. The Safety Committee meeting is open to any interested family member.

In non-COVID years we have been fortunate to have a terrific safety valet staffed by parents in operation every day that school is in session. The safety valet in front of the main entrance on Herkimer Street helps students in grades 1-5 exit their caregiver’s vehicle and enter our campus safely. Our kindergarten students must be brought to and picked up from their classrooms or designated drop-off area (the auditorium during COVID years) by a caregiver each day.

Each year, we complete fire, earthquake, and shelter-in-place drills to offer our school community an opportunity to get prepared for the rare instances when an emergency occurs. Once they have been scheduled, dates for these drills are generally listed on our calendar and are announced in our digital newsletter. We encourage families to become familiar with the Great California Shake Out earthquake drill and to follow the seven steps to earthquake safety.

To prepare students and families for drills and for real emergencies, we recommend families talk to younger children about drills in advance and check out these recommendations for what to so in event of an emergency.
